Monsoon-Induced Disasters Claim 208 Lives Across Country

Kathmandu: The death toll from monsoon-induced disasters across Nepal has risen to 208, according to the latest figures released by the Nepal Police. These fatalities have occurred since the onset of the monsoon season on June 10.

The casualties include three deaths in Kathmandu Valley, 29 in Koshi Province, eight in Madhesh Province, and 45 in Bagmati Province. Gandaki Province has reported 56 deaths, Lumbini Province 37, Karnali Province 14, and Sudurpaschim Province 16, as per Deputy Inspector General (DIG) and Nepal Police Spokesperson Dan Bahadur Karki.

In addition to the fatalities, 271 people have been injured in landslides and floods during this period. The injured include 11 in Kathmandu Valley, 42 in Koshi Province, 12 in Madhesh Province, 31 in Bagmati Province, 47 in Gandaki Province, 25 in Lumbini Province, 67 in Karnali Province, and 36 in Sudurpaschim Province.

Rescue operations by security agencies have saved the lives of 215 individuals from various vulnerable locations since the monsoon began. However, 153 people remain missing, and search efforts are ongoing, DIG Karki added.

The monsoon disasters have also led to significant infrastructure damage, with 365 houses, 126 cowsheds, 52 bridges, six schools, and two government office buildings affected. Additionally, 972 livestock have been lost, and 6,049 households have been displaced over the past two months due to floods and landslides.
